2008 Northwind PRO Hunter Workshops: “How to Find & Hunt Grouse/Woodcock” Now in its 3rd year, the PRO Hunter Workshop is a unique opportunity for Grouse and Woodcock Hunters, to learn how to best Plan their grouse/woodcock hunt by doing pre-hunt Research using information on forestry, grouse habitat, aerial photo and topographical map interpretation, GPS technology, and additional materials to enhance the hunter’s Opportunities to find and strategically hunt Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock. Since early February 2006, we have been holding workshops at various centralized locations throughout Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and Massachusetts. The two of us co-conduct the workshops and they typically last from 3 to 3 1/2 hours. You can pre-register just for you self or for any number of your hunting partners. How to pre-register is covered in detail below. The concept for the Northwind PRO Hunter Workshop was developed over several grouse sessions with input from a number of our guided hunt and grouse clinic clients. Many of our clients asked us if we would “take our Grouse/Woodcock and GPS Clinics on the road” to provide grouse enthusiasts like yourself an “off season” opportunity to learn more about how to find and strategically hunt birds and to make maximum use of the limited time you have available especially when hunting new areas where you’ve never hunted before. This is exactly what our Workshop does. With today’s cost of gas, minimizing the amount of driving you have to do to find birds will more than pay for this workshop. Northwind PRO Hunter Workshop – What you will learn:
Each workshop participant will receive an advanced draft of Ann’s book that contains colored copies of all the power point slides, topographical maps, aerial photographs, and other visual aids used during the workshop. Here’s what some of our Workshop and guided hunt participants have said about us: "Ann, good speaking with you recently. I wanted to share with you the enjoyable grouse season me and my 2 year old Brittney “Cola” had this past fall. After taking your seminar, many things I was doing made sense and I began doing many things you discussed that really increased my success this season. Being able to tell the age and sex of the birds gave me something to share with my hunting pals, but the item that produced the most for me was your advice on approaching a pointed bird and cutting off escape routes. Thinking about this and observing the cover made the approach on a second flush much more predictable and productive. My season was a great success, taking 71 birds and getting my dog on dozens more. I recommend your seminar to anyone who wants to learn more or confirm with the experts on what they think they know about this great game bird. Thank you for your help in making this past fall the best ever in the woods with my dog who I consider my team mate. I can’t wait for tomorrow…it’s one day closer to September 15th. Take care", Karl Schwartz, Saginaw Michigan April 2007 “Ann and Skip – I attended your PRO clinic last night in Madison and I can’t believe what you did to me. You caused me not to get any sleep! The whole night I was tossing and turning thinking of ways to apply my new knowledge gained from your course to the areas I hunt…” Scott Bradley, Poynett WI · “Very informative and helpful in showing one how to look for habitat through the eye of the grouse” Tom Lockner, Lodi WI · “The presenters did an excellent job of demonstrating their education, research, and extensive field experience” John Olsen, Madison WI · “Avery well organized and put together workshop. Definitely worth the time and price” Bill Weber, Cottage Grove WI · “Provided an incredible amount of useful information! Wish I had learned these things years ago” Peg Wanie, Abrams WI · “An excellent tool useful to the pros as well as the novice” Mike, Appleton WI "Good Morning Skip and Ann, How do I say thank you….I still can’t believe the two days that I spent with Ann hunting grouse and woodcock in October 2007. It was two perfect days that I will remember forever. The tile of my hunting journal is “Land, Guns, Dogs, and Birds…liberally stolen from John Taylor’s book about Eastern upland bird hunting. The order seems appropriate. Ann had worked hard to find a cover/cut that had every mix of habitat that grouse need to thrive. I would have never found this area of grouse heaven on my own, but Ann did. The summer spent at the skeet range (4000 rounds) paid off with better shooting on my part. A beautiful side-by-side 20 gauge made the experience more enjoyable. Watching a well trained grouse dog point a jittery and elusive quarry is an examination of the best in genetics and training at work. Finally grouse and woodcock are beautiful wild birds that challenge the best of us. They live where it is remote and beautiful. The shooting is difficult, but possible. We count the number of flushes because it represents opportunities. The two days we hunted we had LOTS of opportunities. A veteran grouse hunter wouldn’t believe the numbers. Habitat, luck, practice, knowledge, and hard work came together and it was sweet. I will savor it forever." Jan Close, Winthrop NY P.S. "Can I book for three days next year???"
