Northwind Kennels

invites you to "Come Ride with Dogs of the Iditarod"

on a Northwoods Sled Dog Adventure

Winter in Wisconsin's Northwoods is an unique and wonderful experience.
There is little that can compare to the thrill of traveling by dog team, in the beautiful
Northwoods. Create memories to take back home with you that will last a life time.

Learn about nature that is  around you and the dogs that will share their world with
you.  To travel with the dogs is more then just a ride,  it is a opportunity to see
wildlife and explore new areas.

Travel in silence with only the sound of the runners sliding in the snow and an occasional
song of the chickadee to sing to you along the way.

At the the end, you return home having gained new skills and created memories that will last a life time.

Here is just some of what you will learn with our guidance:
bullet
Sled dog basics
bullet
Harness and gang line handling
bullet
How to handle the dogs
bullet
How to ride and/or drive (mush) a sled

You will leave the Northwoods of Wisconsin with a deeper understanding of nature and the
dogs that took you into the  "Land of the Tamarack and Pine"

Package #1 - Kennel Tour and Sled Dog Ride :  9am - 11:30am or 1:30pm - 4:00pm

Meet the dogs, many of whom have run the "Last Great Race" the Iditarod from Anchorage to
Nome Alaska (1100 miles) and learn about their care, learn about the equipment used to run the
dogs, then get into a sled and enjoy a ride through the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin.  You
will enjoy the silence of the woods and the rhythmic sound of the dogs feet as they pull you down
the trails.  After the run, back at our camp, enjoy a hot cider or hot chocolate at the Northwind
Wilderness Tour Center and take all the photos you wish.  Maximum per sled is 2 adults or 3 children.
Adult/child combos are fine.  Total weight per sled can not exceed 350 lbs. because the less the
weight, the faster and more comfortable the ride.  Children 5 and under must ride with an adult.
Snow conditions allowing, kennel tours and rides are conducted at 9:00am and 1:30pm all days of the week.
Reservations required.

Cost of Package #1  on weekdays is $100 per adult (16 yrs old +), $50 per child (5-15 years old),
children under 5 free with a paying adult.

Cost of Package #1 on weekends and holidays is $150 per adult (16 yrs old +), $100 per child
(5-15 years old), children under 5 free with a paying adult. Package #1 takes about 2 1/2 hours to complete.

Package #2 - Kennel Tour and Mushing 101: 9:00am - 2:00pm

Want to take a short course in learning how to drive your own sled dog team (mush)?  Start out with
many of the activities described in package #1.  Before getting on the runners behind your own team,
however,  you will take a short training run on a sled pulled behind our snowmobile to learn proper
balance and basic sled techniques.  You will then hook up three or four dogs and drive your own team
on several runs over wilderness trails following your guide (children 7 - 9  will ride with guide on the
longer trail ride but will enjoy their own experience running a smaller team on a shorter trail).  While at
our Northwind Wilderness Base Camp, between runs, you will be treated to hot cider or hot chocolate
and lunch cooked over an open fire (weather allowing.)  Throughout you can take all the photos you
wish.  Snow conditions allowing, your session will start at 9:00am and run until approximately 2:00pm
dependent on the size of the group.
Cost of Package # 2 on weekdays is $150 per adult (16 years old +) and $130 per child (7-15 years old).

Cost of Package # 2 on weekends and holidays is $180 per adult (16 years old +) and $150 per child (7-15 years old).

Please Note the following:

All Northwind Sled Dog Adventures are conducted at our Northwind Wilderness Base Camp located
20 miles north of Park Falls, WI in the heart of the Ashland County Forest.  Sessions are
conducted by the owners, Ann and Skip, with assistance from our associates, not by hired guides.
We believe that the more you learn about the dogs and how to interact with them and the team,
the better your experience will be.

Dog Sledding requires a fair degree of physical activity. Mushers need to be in relatively good health.
If there are any physical restrictions or medical considerations that may impede your experience,
we must be notified when reservations are made.  For the safety of the dogs (maximum pull weight),
as well as the safety of the  musher (sled design balance) the maximum musher weight limit is 250 lbs.

Reservations and Booking Policy:

Both packages require a reservation and a 50% deposit to lock in the date.  The deposit is refundable,
less a $25 booking fee, in the event you have to cancel as long as you give us a 30 day's notice.  in the
event of unsuitable snow conditions or extreme weather conditions, our first option is to re-schedule
you later in the year, our second option is to apply the deposit to a booking next year, or our third option
is to refund the deposit less the booking fee.  We accept all major credit cards for the deposit and
balance as well as personal checks or money orders.  To book an adventure or for more information
